NON-PUBLIC 33, PUBLIC 12
Non-Pub owned a slim lead (two points) at halftime and a big one (19 points) after
three quarters while bouncing back from a 24-point spanking in 2016. No game
records were broken/tied, but the teams did combine for 220 yards on 28 penalties.
In the big-time oddity department, we offer this: All three TD plays in the third
quarter covered 34 yards (and N-P's first score was a 33-yarder). Anthony Butler
(Roman) passed 5-for-7 for 127 yards and a TD to Mark Webb (Wood) while
Mike "Neeko" Hnatkowsky (Penn Charter) completed six of 13 tosses for 90 yards
and scores to Shawn Thompson (Wood) and Ahmad Kent (West Catholic). The
three TDs in the third quarter were scored in succession and a fumble recovery by
Danny Bentley (Conwell-Egan) set up the last one. Cyree Boggs (West Catholic) also
recovered a fumble while adding two tackles for losses. For Public, Nasir Boykin
(Imhotep) passed 11-for-27 for 238 yards, primarily to schoolmates Jeff Davis
(3-87) and Aamir Brown (3-70).
2016
PUBLIC 58, NON-PUBLIC 34
The Pub eclipsed the record for points by one team and the Non-Pub came up with enough offense of its own to make sure the total mark also was subjected to an eraser. Shayne Smith (Del-Val) passed 10-for-19 for 305 yards for a record-tying three TDs, and two, including an 18-yarder on the final play of the game, went to Naseir "Pop" Upshur (Imhotep). Casey Williams (Southern) was the very definition of production. His two carries went for just three yards -- along with 12 points. In addition to thumping a 25-yard field goal, DeJason Ellis (Mastery North) hit seven PAT to break that record. The Pub stormed to a 38-13 halftime lead and won the fourth quarter, 20-7,
after the Non-Pub scrambled within 38-27. Ryan Quigley (Lansdale Catholic) scored N-P's first TD on a 40-yard, trick-play pass from receiver Dontae Mason (McDevitt) while Anthony Russo (Wood) threw for two more scores in a 22-for-36, 261-yard effort. The yardage numbers for Smith and Russo claimed the No. 2 and 3 spots in All-Star
history and Russo's completion/attempt totals broke records. In all, there were 857 scrimmage yards (606 in air) and 38 first downs. Alas, there were also 177 penalty yards. Steve Devlin (Wood) was the Non-Pub's coach for the third consecutive year and his son, Mike, notched a TD reception. All three award recipients were Vikings: James
Gillespie (offense), Gianni Cruel (defense) and Russo (sportsmanship).
2015
NON-PUBLIC 34, PUBLIC 33
This one featured an ALL-time finish. With eight-10ths of a second remaining, after a violation of special game rules concerning alignments/actions had pushed back the ball from the 5 to the 20, Paul Dooley (SCH Academy) bobbed, weaved and bobbed some more before hitting a prone John Hall (Wood) for a TD to tie the score. Because the N-P subs rushed the field to celebrate, a 15-yard penalty meant the PAT by Dan
McDonald (Wood) would have to cover 35 yards. It did, easily. There were four TDs in the final 4:57, as Dooley and Kevin Caldwell (Franklin) passed for two apiece. The Pub's final score -- Caldwell to Travon Williams (Northeast), 7 yards -- was posted at 1:11. The N-P's final drive covered 87 yards and the Pub thrice was hit with 15-yard
penalties for special violations. Alex Arcangeli (Wood) broke the record for rushing yardage with 14 totes for 193 yards and one TD. The mark, belonging to Harry Ulmer (North Catholic, 139), had stood since 1979. Caldwell crushed the record for passing yardage (183 by King's Joseph Walker in '14), going 11-for-19 for 347 and three TDs. Rodriguez totaled 203 yards of rushing/receiving/returning. Denniston "DJ" Moore (Imhotep) had 175 on catches/returns. As in '14, the Non-Public coach was Wood's Steve Devlin.
2014
NON-PUBLIC 34, PUBLIC 20
For the first time, game brass permitted the Non-Public team to use players from Catholic schools outside the city limits and the newbies certainly made a difference, accounting for all five of their team's TDs. Lamont Veal (O'Hara) rushed for two scores, Kendall Singleton (Wood) posted one on a pass (from O'Hara's Dashawn "Day-Day" Darden) and another on his only rush (for 35 yards) while Chris Gary (Wood) tallied for the defense on a 55-yard pick six on the final play of the first half, shortly after the Pub had recovered an onside kick. Singleton and Gary earned MVP honors and the coach was Wood's Steve Devlin. After being intercepted four times, King's Joseph Walker (7-for-21) used some late connections to claim the game record for passing yards with 183. Jylil Reeder (Fels) made three snags for 144 yards and an 80-yard score. Gary finished with seven tackles. Jordan Alexander
(King) topped Public with nine. The teams combined to commit 27 penalties for 265 yards; many came on violations of special rules concerning defensive alignments/actions.
2013
PUBLIC 21, NON-PUBLIC 7
While claiming a third consecutive win for the first time since a four-year run from 1983-86, Public received gigantic performances by guys from schools about to close. Bok was repped by Vittorio "Vito" Goggins -- he numbered eight solos among 15 tackles (five behind the line) and forced a fumble, recovered by Renz "Rodeo" Compton (Frankford), that set up the first of two rushing TDs for Wayne Brunson (Southern) -- and Antoine Whitney, who turned the second of two laterals on a kickoff return into a 79-yard TD while adding 32 yards on five catches. Also
starring from about-to-be-shuttered schools were Comm Tech's Diquan Gilbert (10 tackles, one solo sack and two partials) and Germantown's Darnell Baldwin (five solos among six stops). Rene Villafane, of going-nowhere Washington, added two interceptions. For N-P, which suited just 28 players, Dennis Boice (Judge) burrowed 1 yard for the TD, lineman Paul Johnson (SJ Prep) made seven stops and powered through to block a field goal, and Sharif Custis (Neumann-Goretti) caught three passes for 49 yards, recovered a fumble and notched three TFLs.
N-P's coach was N-G's C.J. Szydlik. His dad, Charlie, of North Catholic, was N-P's boss in '07 and '10. He assisted C.J. for this one, which was played at Northeast High under steady, second-half rain.
2012
PUBLIC 29, NON-PUBLIC 22
Sharif Smith (Furness) burrowed for a pair of 1-yard TDs and his QB partner, Marquise Brown (Bok), passed for two more scores as Public posted a second consecutive win for the first time since capturing four in a row from 1983 to ’86. Crazy developments ruled the night. Smith’s first TD came shortly after a do-over; an unsuccessful fourth-down play was canceled after the refs ruled N-P had broken a game rule concerning blitzes. In the third quarter, the TD pass that put Public ahead for good, at 22-15, was caught by Shakur NeSmith (Imhotep),
who’d been ejected in the second quarter after tangling with Blaise Schieler (West Catholic); the coaches met at halftime and agreed to overrule the ejections. N-P drew within one score at 1:06 on a 14-yard flip from Rob Daniels (Judge; 13-for-24, 116) to Bruce Mapp (WC; 6-76) and got the ball back at 0:19. Michael Brown (Northeast) then joined Andre Shirley (King) and Khalil Scott (Gratz) in the interception column. Demetrius Town (Franklin) was also crucial to the defensive success by making three of his six stops behind the line of scrimmage. The punters – N-P’s Dave Faraldo (Judge; 3-41.3) and Pub’s Howard Lynn (Northeast; 6-38.2) -- were tremendous. Lynn did his punting left-footed and used his right foot for kickoffs/PATs. The site was again Lincoln Financial Field.
2011
PUBLIC 30, NON-PUBLIC 20
Though it surrendered 319 passing yards, Public exacted its revenge in the final eight minutes by posting two long TDs on interceptions to reverse a 20-16 deficit and put the brakes on a four-losses-in-five-years skid (three in succession). Camille Max (Northeast) covered 51 yards on the first pick six, then saw Daquan
Cooper (Washington) go a whole lot farther (95 yards). Cooper had provided momentum 0:33 before halftime with a leaping, 7-yard TD catch in the back left corner of the end zone on a perfect toss from schoolmate Tony Smith
(8-for-14, 102), moving the Pub within 17-16. English "Buddy" Peay (Washington) scored the game's first TD on a 7-yard pass from Fels' Tyree "Bam" Rucker (10-for-16, 113) and Claudy Mathieu (Washington) was dominant at defensive end. For N-P, Jaelen Strong-Rankin (West Catholic) owned the receiving record by halftime and finished with seven catches for an outrageous 237 yards (previous record: 140) and TDs of 52 and 61 yards. John Loughery (Penn Charter) threw both while going 4-for-7 for 132 yards. Loughery's dad, also John, whipped two
TD passes in the '78 game. Anthony Reid (West Catholic) passed 7-for-15 for 154 yards. Brian Dones (Chestnut Hill) posted a pick and schoolmate Christian Guinan booted field goals of 29 and 19 yards. The site was again Lincoln Financial Field.

NON-PUBLIC 16, PUBLIC 15
The teams' first meeting at Lincoln Financial Field, witnessed by 4,936, produced a hero from nearby 12th and Ritner, Neumann-Goretti's Will Huff tied the record for field goals, with three (27, 28 and 33 yards), and hit what
proved to be the game-winning PAT in the third quarter after Pete Hurley (SJ Prep) caught a 17-yard TD pass from Jarred Evans (West Catholic; 8-for-11, 94 yards). Huff was important to the field position battle as well,
averaging 38.3 yards on three punts. Curt Wortham (Judge) produced 115 yards on 21 rushes and made two catches for 23 yards and Eugene Byrd (North Catholic) added 60 yards on 11 totes. David Williams (North Catholic) made two of his six tackles behind the line. For Public, Ramadan Abdullah (Germantown), who also shared the QB spot, snagged a 77-yard TD pass from Malik Stokes (Northeast) and Tyriuq "Pop Tart" Gordon (U. City) ran 1 yard for a score immediately after Kwame Bell (Roxborough) recovered a fumble. With 13 tackles, two for losses, Zaire "Bam" Anderson (Frankford) was a game-long terror and schoolmate Taron "Ra-Ra" Mills made an interception. Public hurt itself with 112 yards in penalties.
2009
NON-PUBLIC 40, PUBLIC 0
N-P won by crush-job proportions for the third time in four years. Its first six possessions produced TDs and the mercy rule took effect with 7:34 left in the third quarter. Beforehand, Judge wideout Tom Ryan joked with QB
Mark Giubilato (SJ Prep) that he'd leave at halftime if the lead stood at 35 points. Reason? Judge's prom. A score of 33-0 was close enough, so all four Judge participants took off. Ryan finished with four catches (two spectacular)
for 97 yards and one TD. Giubilato (8-for-13, two TDs) tied the game mark for passing yards with 175 while Penn State-bound Curtis Drake (West Catholic) added 104 yards of throwing-running. Drake and West teammates
Raymond "Syrup" Maples (10-74), Rob Hollomon (13-43) and Juan Rozier all ran for scores while another Burr, Eric Young, caught a TD pass. Terence Johns (Dougherty) caught an uncaught kickoff after the first tally, Mike Pereira (SJ Prep) recovered a fumble and interceptions went to schoolmates Marty Bernard and Kassiem Everett (Roman). With no specialists on the roster, Drake toed PAT and Giubilato kicked off. For Public, Stacey Hill (Comm.
Tech) rushed 12 times for 46 yards and Laquan Williams passed for 59 yards. They shared QB duties.
2008
NON-PUBLIC 48, PUBLIC 7
The Non-Public used a strong wind and effective defense to win the field position battle again and again in the early going, and wound up rolling to the easiest victory in all-star history. For the third consecutive year, the record
for receiving yardage was eclipsed as Al Desiderio (Roman) made four snags for 140 yards and one TD apiece from QB Mike Mattei (Chestnut Hill) and Andrew McHale (Judge). Mattei, feared to have suffered an injury
to his right (throwing) thumb earlier that day in a baseball game, passed 7-for-9 for 148 yards and a record three TDs and tallied his own TD on a 1-yard burrow. His other TD tosses went to schoolmate Mike Wismer and Nick
Ferdinand (Ryan). Jamir Livingston (SJ Prep) ran 10 times for 128 yards and the first two scores. Pete Sellecchia and Shahid Paulhill (both of North Catholic) made 10 and nine tackles, respectively, while schoolmate Terrell
"The Sane T.O." Oglesby had an interception en route to helping to prevent the Pub from preventing a pass. Chris Fioravanti (Roman) hit his first six PATs. Darius Johnson (Overbrook) ran for a score, QB Antione "Blueberry" Singleton managed 43 yards on 10 carries and Ervin Goodson (Frankford) posted 83 yards on four returns.
2007
PUBLIC 30, NON-PUBLIC 24 (OT)
The Pub jumped to a 12-0 lead, needed a late TD to force OT, then won it with a 1-yard, fourth-down run by Calvin Spires (Frankford) after holding N-P in the top half of football's version of an inning on an interception by Darrell
"Butta" Brown (Dobbins). The megastar was 5-6 Kendell Coleman (King), who turned 14 touches into 215 yards of rushing-receiving-returning. He scored TDs on dashes of 64 yards with a punt and 70 with a screen pass, and with 132 yards on four catches he made sure the game receiving yardage was snapped for the second consecutive year. Jerrick Jenkins (Gratz) passed for 167 yards and his 12-yard scramble made it 24-24 with 47.5 seconds showing in regulation. The game's eighth failed conversion followed. John Kennedy (Central) made two interceptions. For N-P, Daryl Robinson (North Catholic) caught three passes for 75 yards and two TDs. Mark Hatty (Neumann-Goretti) hit him for one of those and fired another to Ryan McCullough (North Catholic) while going 9-for-18 for 135.
2006
NON-PUBLIC 42, PUBLIC 13
The Pub scored first and last, and got pummeled in between. Bill Edger (SJ Prep), the son of Southern coach Bill Edger Sr., set a game record for receiving yardage with 128 (on six catches; highlighted by a 42-yard TD) and added 57 more yards on six punt returns. Mike Varanavage (Ryan), not expected to run the ball much when practices began, turned 21 carries into 103 yards and two TDs. Rockeed McCarter (Roman), enrolled at Northeast through his junior year and the brother of a former Pub star, Rodney (Bok '01), blocked a punt and gained control
of the ball just before stepping into the end zone; it went as a 1-yard return. Daniel Chavis (West) and Colin Wixted scored the other N-P TDs on short runs while the passing game was highly productive thanks to Justin DeCristofaro (Judge, 12-for-22, 149 yards) and Mike "Reds" Davis (Ryan, 6-for-6, 109, TD to Edger). Dantzler (Franklin) and Lamone Fox (Northeast) ran for the Pub's TDs and linebacker Aaron "A-Trane" Washington (Roxborough) made 12 tackles.
2005
PUBLIC 30, NON-PUBLIC 0
After N-P mishandled the opening kickoff, Chris Banks (Northeast) recovered, Sammy Tranks (King) soon nailed a 31-yard field goal and Public never looked back while impressively halting a three-game losing streak. Jerry Butler (Washington) ran 10 times for 133 yards and a record-tying three TDs; his highlight was a 79-yarder a minute before halftime. Tranks also set a mark with a 67-yard TD off an interception and his 42-yard catch began the PL's last drive, culminated by Butler's 15-yard TD run. Joe DiGrazio (Lincoln) made 11 tackles, Cornelius Bunch
(Central) posted 2.5 sacks among nine stops and Cory Moultrie (Bok) made two of his team's five interceptions. N-P's lone headliner was Steve Quinn (SJ Prep), who made five catches for 86 yards.
2004
NON-PUBLIC 33, PUBLIC 21
The N-P's high-profile stars led the way on a night when records were smashed in routine fashion and, unfortunately, the game came to a screeching halt in scary fashion with 2:21 left when gunshots rang out in the parking lot. Curtis "Boonah" Brinkley (West Catholic), the leading rusher in city history for a game (399), season
(2,813) and career (7,413) became the first player in all-star annals to score three TDs. He did so strictly on rushes while gaining 55 yards on 15 carries. He added 19 yards on receptions and 32 on returns. Andre Sloan-El (Roman), a lefty, shattered the game record for passing yards (129) even before halftime and finished 13-for-16 (two drops) for 175 yards and a touchdown. He also established standards for completions and yards-per-attempt (10.9). Matt Parkhurst (SJ Prep) caught that coring pass from Sloan-El and set a record for receptions with seven; they netted 105 yards. N-P rolled up 446 yards total offense. Eighty of those yards came with 3:11 left
as Dale Curry and Carl Peterson (both of Judge) hooked up for a TD of record-tying distance. Their piece of the mark vanished on the very next scrimmage play as Rich McFillin (Washington) fired an 83-yard scoring bomb to Michael Washington (Frankford). Earlier, on a 35-yard scoring toss from Central's Marcel Quarterman
(7-for-20, 134), Washington made an all-time reception. Amidst double coverage, he stretched out fully to snag a tipped ball inches from the ground. Arnold Mullins (Frankford) had the next-best moment for Public, scoring on a beautiful, zig-zag-zig, 35-yard run. Billy Canady (Neumann) and Greg Ambrogi (SJ Prep) had N-P picks.
2003
NON-PUBLIC 20, PUBLIC 3
Pat Kaiser (SJ Prep) rushed 22 times for 75 yards and two TDs, hammered two PAT and made a 31-yard reception as N-P claimed a second consecutive win. Kaiser had finished the 2002 season with 37 total TDs, 35 rushing TDs and 306 total points; all were city marks. Kaiser did his scoring in the first half, running 3 and 8 yards for TDs that sandwiched a 22-yard field goal by Northeast's Steve Sandberg. Fumble recoveries by Mike "Benji" Gillespie (Neumann) and Stephen Sizer (SJ Prep, his first of two) set up Kaiser's TDs. The N-P's other TD came just 20 seconds before halftime and proved to be a balloon-deflater. The honors were done by Johnny Ortiz (Roman) on a 3-yard pass from Matt Ryan (Penn Charter). Ortiz had helped to start the thrust with a 21-yard punt return to the N-P 44. N-P forced five turnovers. Bernie Mullen (Judge) also had a fumble recovery and Robert Ramsey (West Catholic) made an interception. For Public, Lateef Ferguson (Dobbins) made 17 tackles and forced a fumble and fellow linebacker Jameel McClain (Washington) made 13 stops and recovered that fumble. Darrell "D.J." Turner (Frankford) passed 6-for-15 for 112 yards and Andre Odom (Washington) had two interceptions.
2002
NON-PUBLIC 16, PUBLIC 14
N-P fell into a 14-0 hole, then stormed to victory behind a pair of passing TDs and a 31-yard field goal by Justin O'Brien (Judge). SJ Prep teammates Jim Lachman (4-84) and Pete Chromiak made the TD catches; Greg Hennigar (Judge) and Vince Gallagher (SJ Prep) did the throwing. Rich Ott (Ryan) and Mike Piotrowicz (North Catholic) made eight and seven tackles, respectively. Omar Sanders (Overbrook) and Ryan Gore (Washington) ran for Public TDs while Maurice Bennett (Washington) and Anthony Wynder (Mastbaum) made 10 tackles each.
2001
PUBLIC 13, NON-PUBLIC 0
Two records were set as Public posted just the fourth shutout in series history. The first mark came when Teddy Lipford (Central) hit Jose Pagan (Edison) with an 80-yard scoring pass. The second ended the scoring as Roger Price (Washington) boomed a 44-yard field goal; he earlier had a 22-yarder. Ivan Kosty (Washington) and Rodney McCarter (Bok) made interceptions while Timothy King (Edison) recovered a fumble and Shawn Williams (Frankford) made nine tackles. For Non-Public, Michael Bazemore (West Catholic) made 11 tackles. Vernard Abrams (Dougherty) began the game at wideout, but eventually had to play quarterback due to injuries.
2000
NON-PUBLIC 17, PUBLIC 10
Ben Dever (Dougherty) and Kevin Stefanski (SJ Prep) combined to pass 10-for-18 for 137 yards, James Berry (Penn Charter) and Fran Semon (North Catholic) ran for TDs and the defense limited the Public squad to 56 yards on 33 plays. Mike Walls (Ryan) made six tackles, with two for 13 yards in losses, while Brian Kulb (North) made five tackles and an interception. Paul Ragan (Judge) had a 37-yard field goal. For Public, LB Angel Moultair (Germantown) was sensational with 19 tackles, two forced fumbles and a blocked PAT. John Grone (Mastbaum, run) and Tony Felice (Northeast, FG) did the scoring.
1999
PUBLIC 14, NON-PUBLIC 11
The game ended in dramatic fashion as linemen Brett Singleton (Dobbins), Mark Horton (Germantown) and Scott Smith (Washington) combined to stop Stephen Piner (West Catholic) at the 6-inch line on fourth-and-goal from the 2. Andre Davis (Dobbins) made 10 tackles, started the game with a 57-yard kickoff return and later had a 95-yard fumble return for a TD. Also, after his punt was blocked, he nudged the ball out of the end zone when Sean Cassidy (Ryan) was about to recover for a TD. Kairi Cooper (Central) rushed 18 times for 60 yards and Edvard Jean (Washington) threw a scoring pass to David Kenner (Frankford). For N-P, Steve Comly (SJ Prep) passed 5-for-10 for 118 yards and schoolmate Jim Jankiewicz made five receptions for 50 yards.
1998
NON-PUBLIC 9, PUBLIC 6
Mike Prince (Dougherty) made five receptions for 90 yards and had a 48-yard
catch from Joe Corsanico (Ryan) that set up the winning touchdown, a 1-yard
run by Jeff Moore (Ryan) with 1:18 remaining. Corsanico finished 4-for-9 for
89 yards and schoolmate Mike Gavaghan kicked a 27-yard field goal. Victor
Hobson (SJ Prep) made eight tackles and showed versatility by adding one catch
and one return. For Public, Paul Northern (Bartram) rushed 11 times for 73
yards and the game's first score.
1997
PUBLIC 23, NON-PUBLIC 6
George Radu (Washington) set a game record by hammering field goals of 27, 37
and 31 yards and sent all five of his kickoffs to at least the 13-yard line.
Ed Giddings (University City) got the winners rolling with an 80-yard
touchdown on a flanker reverse. Steve Szydlik (Frankford) passed 10-for-17 for
101 yards and scored on a 2-yard run. Mike Crawford (Mastbaum) made seven
tackles and blocked a field goal attempt. For Non-Public, Eric Martinson (West
Catholic) passed 10-for-27 for 129 yards and a score to Kevin Joyce (Neumann).
1996
NON-PUBLIC 10, PUBLIC 6
With just over 2:30 remaining, N-P was trailing, 6-3, and Scott Palanjian (SJ
Prep) was preparing to attempt a 29-yard field goal. But after catching a high
snap, holder Tim Dumas (Ryan) took off and scampered for a 12-yard touchdown.
Palanjian earlier kicked a 37-yard field goal. Chris Kennedy (Ryan) rushed 18
times for 69 yards and Kevin Campbell (Ryan) made nine tackles. For Public,
Samuel Bookard (Washington) scored on a 52-yard interception return and
blocked a field goal attempt and Marcus Godfrey (Mastbaum) rushed 15 times for
67 yards.
1995
PUBLIC 21, NON-PUBLIC 20
Spencer Whetts (Germantown) scored the game's first TD on a 1-yard sneak and
passed 6-for-7 for 71 yards and another TD to his high school teammate, Javer
Dillard. Receiver Hassan Brockman (Dobbins) scored the winning TD on a 38-yard
reverse with 3:20 left and Dan Cliggett (Washington) added his third PAT. For
Non-Public, Keith Boggi (Judge) produced 53 yards and a TD on seven rushes and
Jim Emanuel (Ryan) made 11 tackles.
1994
NON-PUBLIC 23, PUBLIC 12
Quarterback Jess Sodaski (SJ Prep) rushed nine times for 57 yards and a
touchdown and passed 4-for-7 for 56 yards, while schoolmate Lance Shaw rushed
20 times for 100 yards and two TDs. Shawn McNesby (Roman) led the defense with
nine tackles. For Public, Jonathan ``Country'' Perry (Gratz) made 11 tackles,
including four for losses, and forced a fumble.
1993
NON-PUBLIC 22, PUBLIC 19
A 1-yard run by Brian Kennedy (Judge) with 24 seconds remaining decided the
first All-Star game played in May. The first 18 had been played in April. Troy
Kersey (Dougherty) caught six passes for 100 yards. Jason Berghaier (Judge)
had nine tackles. For Public, James ``Noot'' Smith (Gratz) rushed 12 times for
63 yards and a TD.
1992
PUBLIC 14, NON-PUBLIC 0
Scotty Mack (Roxborough) carried nine times for 116 yards and touchdowns of
20 and 56 yards. Stacey Lane (Olney) led the defense with seven tackles,

Halfback Mark Ostaszewski (Ryan) and quarterback Derrick Norris (Dougherty)
combined for 135 yards total offense, though neither scored. Two N-P TDs came
on defense as Darrin MacMillan (Dougherty) recovered a fumble in the end zone
and Mike Conway (Dougherty) ran 7 yards with a fumble. For Public, Mica
Dawkins (Gratz) scored on an 89-yard kickoff and Lance Johnstone (Germantown)
made 10 tackles.
1990
PUBLIC 13, NON-PUBLIC 12
Charles Way (Northeast) made seven tackles to key a defense that forced five
turnovers. Dave MacDonald (Lincoln) passed for two TDs as Public scored the
first 13 points. A third TD pass, an 80-yarder, was wiped out by penalty. For
Non-Public, Frank Costa (SJ Prep) completed 10 of 20 passes for 83 yards and
two TDs.
1989
NON-PUBLIC 36, PUBLIC 15
Jeff Simmins (Judge), whose highest output during the season had been 50
yards, rushed nine times for 56 yards and two TDs. Frank Wycheck (Ryan) added
68 yards and a TD on 11 carries. Frank Altmire (Ryan) led the defense with two
interceptions. For Public, Patrick Tomosky (Roxborough) passed 5-for-10 for
129 yards and Keita Crespina (Lincoln) made four catches for 100 yards.
1988
PUBLIC 7, NON-PUBLIC 0
In the first All-Star Game to be played at night, Jerome ``Boxcar'' Bailey
(Bok) ran for a 1-yard TD 2:57 before halftime to account for the scoring.
Harun Reed (Frankford) had 10 tackles and an interception while Roger Talley
(Dobbins) made three interceptions. For Non-Public, Chris Fagan passed
10-for-25 for 66 yards, Rob Gentile (West Catholic) made six catches for 49
yards and Brian Erwin (Ryan) made 11 tackles.
1987
NON-PUBLIC 16, PUBLIC 14
Al Settembrino (Ryan) rushed 26 times for 114 yards and two TDs, and added 61
yards on returns, and Tim Cunniff (Ryan) made the difference by kicking a
20-yard field goal with 3:28 left. Rich Ritchie (Roman) made nine tackles and
halted Public's last possession by forcing a fumble. Tom Erwin (Ryan) also had
nine tackles. For Public, Marc Wilson (King) ran for 54 yards and passed for
81. Rich Drayton (Central) made two catches for 70 yards.
1986
PUBLIC 12, NON-PUBLIC 6
Ron Bryant (King) caught a 2-yard TD pass from Keith Singleton (Washington)
with 2:23 left to break a 6-6 tie. Todd Mitchell (King) rushed 20 times for 97
yards. Kenyatta Rush (Central) led the defense with eight tackles. Jorge
Oquendo (Olney) and Matt Evangelist (Frankford) had seven apiece. For
Non-Public, Rick Hollawell (Ryan) produced 58 yards and a TD on 20 carries and
picked up 100 yards on six returns. Vince Grimes (Judge) made nine tackles.
1985
PUBLIC 33, NON-PUBLIC 13
Cary Boyd (Northeast) ran for one TD and passed for another and Dave
Parkinson (Northeast) kicked field goals of 32 and 35 yards to pace the rout.
Blair Thomas (Frankford) ran 11 times for 48 yards and a TD and Darryl Pinkney
(Roxborough) caught a 48-yard TD pass from Jose Vizcarrondo (Olney). Virnest
Beale (Northeast) had three interceptions, while David Stone (Frankford) and
Darren Harris (Dobbins) had 10 tackles apiece. For Non-Public, Ed Tamasitis
(Judge) passed 9-for-13 for 119 yards and Dave Waskiewicz (Judge) made five
receptions for 94 yards.
1984
PUBLIC 13, NON-PUBLIC 3
Central's Jimmy Wilson (16-67) and Bartram's Hector Scott (13-59, TD) led the
rushing attack. James Parker (Dobbins) passed 7-for-12 for 88 yards. Mark
Barnum (Washington) led the defense with 11 tackles, while John Downing
(Washington) and Steve Cullmann (Northeast) had 10 apiece. For Non-Public,
Andy Garczynski (Dougherty) gained 118 yards on receptions and returns.
1983
PUBLIC 31, NON-PUBLIC 14
Germantown's Steve Duncan (27-107), Bartram's David Boone (13-77, TD) and
Frankford's Charles Thomas (9-112, 90-yard TD) ran wild for the winners. Also,
Kenny Young (King) passed 8-for-17 for 91 yards and a score. John Adams (King)
and Brian Davis (Central) made eight tackles apiece. For Non-Public, John
Smith (Penn Charter) rushed 20 times for 115 yards and two TDs. Rich Gannon
(SJ Prep) accounted for 76 yards total offense, kicked two PATs and punted
four times for a 37.5-yard average.
1982
NON-PUBLIC 18, PUBLIC 6
Charles ``Chaly'' Coyle (Dougherty) made two of his team's seven
interceptions in ultrawindy conditions. Jerry Magallanes (Judge) ran 12 times
for 36 yards and two TDs. For Public, Lincoln's Tony Fera (10) and Southern's
Chris D'Amico (nine) were the leading tacklers.
1981
NON-PUBLIC 10, PUBLIC 0
Bob Hudoka (Dougherty) kicked a 26-yard field goal and quarterback John
McGeehan (Roman) ran 2 yards for a TD in a driving rainstorm. An interception
by Jay Curcio (Penn Charter) and a fumble recovery by Tim Dronson (Penn
Charter) set up the scores. Pete Mitchell (Dougherty) had six tackles. For
Public, Vic Bellamy (Central) produced 74 yards on receptions and returns and
Steve Kelly (Washington) made seven tackles.
1980
PUBLIC 13, NON-PUBLIC 12
Robert Crawford (Central) ran 10 yards for one TD and Kevin Ingram (Dobbins)
passed 3 yards to Alan Twyman (Central) for another and Karl Siegle
(Northeast) kicked the PAT. For Non-Public, Jim Pawloski (Ryan) made two
receptions for 74 yards and Cosmo Losco (Judge) had four returns for 58 yards.
1979
NON-PUBLIC 14, PUBLIC 6
Harry Ulmer (North Catholic) rushed 14 times for 138 yards and a TD at
Franklin Field. Joe McErlean (SJ Prep) ran for the other TD. Mike McCloskey
(Judge) caught two passes for 43 yards. For Public, Bruce Carthon (Lincoln)
had four returns for 53 yards while Don Speller (Bartram) threw an 18-yard TD
pass and ran 10 times for 58 yards.
1978
NON-PUBLIC 36, PUBLIC 8
Before 28,432 fans at Franklin Field, John Loughery (Penn Charter) completed
three of four passes for 72 yards and two TDs. Ed Clark (Judge) and Bob
Loscalzo (Dougherty) also passed for TDs and Tim Gramlich (Roman) turned two
catches into 78 yards and two scores. Brian Ewell (Chestnut Hill) ran 13 times
for 79 yards and a TD. For Public, Bob Perry (Gratz) recovered two fumbles and
Avis Smith (Penn) caught two passes for 30 yards.
1977
PUBLIC 8, NON-PUBLIC 8 (TIE)
Non-Public gained the tie in the fourth quarter when Mike Paulone, of the
Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, completed a 17-yard TD pass to Paul Lafferty
(Judge) and followed with a conversion pass to Jerry Smith (Neumann). Paulone
passed 5-for-10 for 46 yards. For Public, Mastbaum's Leo McClelland (19-85,
TD) and Bartram's Michael Gold (18-51) led the rushing attack.
1976
PUBLIC 14, NON-PUBLIC 6
Stellar defense by James Parker (Franklin), Theodore Smith III (West Phila.)
and Anthony Scott (University City) limited Non-Public to minus-14 yards total
offense. Nate Montgomery (Lincoln) led the offense by rushing 14 times for 53
yards and a clinching TD with 43 seconds left. Bob Keels (Central) added three
catches for 37 yards. For Non-Public, Lawrence Reid (Dougherty) carried nine
times for 27 yards.
1975
NON-PUBLIC 13, PUBLIC 8
Before an overflow crowd of 14,426 at Northeast High, Jack Maley (Penn
Charter) passed 3-for-6 for 79 yards and produced the first TD in All-Star
Game history with a 41-yard pass to Mike Morrin (North Catholic). The other
Non-Public TD was scored by John Citrone (Roman) on an 8-yard run. Brett Egan
(West Catholic) was in on 13 tackles. For Public, Mark Sydow (Central) made
seven unassisted tackles and Tim Murphy (Lincoln) scored the TD on a 5-yard
keeper.
